How Safe are Your Child’s Pain Reliever Medications?

Announced April, 2010, McNeil Consumer Healthcare in consultation with the Food and Drug Administration, are recalling certain infant and children Tylenol and other over-the-counter liquid medications. Although the recall is not due to any reported adverse medical event, it is a precautionary action as some of the products may contain higher concentrations of active ingredients than specified. Tylenol, for example, contains the active ingredient acetaminophen used to reduce minor pain and fever, the symptoms of allergies, cold and flu. Some children’s Motrin products are also recalled as these may not meet required quality standards. Motrin contains ibuprofen. Unlike acetaminophen, ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory medication commonly known as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, or NSAID. Motrin, like Tylenol is also used for minor pain.

In addition to possibly carrying higher concentrations of active ingredients than listed, some of the recalled products may contain tiny particles or inactive ingredients that may not meet internal testing criteria.

It is has been advised for parents and healthcare givers to discontinue use in children of the recalled products and to seek medical aid if one of the products has been administered and the child exhibits unexpected symptoms.

Full details of the recalled products are available at the McNeil Consumer Healthcare Product Recall Information website & FDA’s link at http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm210443.htm.
